Reviving Catalyst Wedding Magazine: A Fresh Take on Community, Equity, and Inspiration in the Wedding Industry

Are you a vendor or couple tired of traditional wedding practices that don’t reflect your values? Curious about how a historic feminist and queer-focused platform is coming back stronger and more inclusive than ever? This Month on the Pink Haired Planning Pod, Amy Sims and I discussed the relaunch of Catalyst Wed Co. Catalyst is an initiative that’s weaving community, education, and advocacy into the fabric of wedding planning. Whether you’re a queer or allied industry pro or a queer couple planning your day and wanting pre vetted vendors, Catalyst is a good fit for you.

What is Catalyst Wedding Magazine — And Why Is It Making a Comeback?

Catalyst Wedding Magazine started in 2015 as a print publication celebrating feminist principles in the wedding industry. It asked a powerful question: Can you be a feminist and plan a wedding? Over the years, it built a vibrant community of vendors, couples, and advocates dedicated to challenging traditional norms, promoting inclusivity, and centering marginalized voices.

Fast forward to today, amid a shifting cultural and political landscape, Catalyst is returning with a modern mission — focused on supporting queer couples, challenging systemic inequalities, and creating a platform where authenticity and community can thrive. We are reimagining what a wedding industry community can be, rooted in values of anti-racism, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and mutual support.

Why Now?

Because authenticity and advocacy are increasingly crucial in a sector often criticized for exclusivity and inauthenticity. The wedding industry often has a bad reputation for centering heteronormative couples and promoting how you “should” have a wedding, rather than having a wedding that reflects you. Catalyst’s new iteration aims to be a safe space for both vendors and couples who want their wedding experience (and the industry itself) to be more equitable and representative.

The Evolution: From Feminist Roots to Queer-Centered Community

The original founders of Catalyst kicked things off in 2015, at a time marked by political optimism with figures like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton advocating for progressive values. The magazine championed radical ideas such as vendors working intentionally, couples embracing their identities, and inspired a community that wanted more than traditional whitewashed fairytale weddings. But over the years, the platform evolved. It incorporated voices like Jen, Carly, Liz, and Amber, each bringing their own perspectives on activism, representation, and community-building.

From housing political content to featuring real weddings and vendor spotlights, Catalyst became a nexus for those who saw wedding planning not just as a service, but as a form of activism. Today, with a fresh perspective, the new Catalyst explicitly centers queer couples and the vendors who serve them, recognizing that wedding industry practices still often marginalize non-heteronormative love stories. The shift isn’t leaving behind feminism—instead it’s expanding the lens to include queer equity and intersectionality.

Catalyst isn’t just a magazine anymore; it’s a movement to change the industry from within, supporting vendors and couples to help build a more meaningful and inclusive celebration.

How Catalyst Will Serve Its Community: Four Pillars for Impact

The renewed vision for Catalyst is built on four core pillars that aim to foster real connection, ongoing education, and community support:

1. Creating Inclusive CommunitiesRegional groups across the country

Initially in areas like New York and DC—community hubs will serve as hubs for vendors and couples to connect. These spaces promote networking, mutual support, and collaborative growth, making it easier for marginalized vendors to find opportunities and for couples to discover vendors aligned with their values.

2. Providing Ongoing Education

One of the most exciting aspects is the focus on vendor education—covering topics like anti-racism training, inclusive language, mental health, and marketing strategies. These resources aim to elevate vendor professionalism and inclusivity, while couples benefit from knowing that their vendors are well-informed and culturally competent.

3. Supporting the Queer Community

Catalyst’s heart beats for queer couples and queer vendors. From showcasing vendors who openly identify as LGBTQ+ to highlighting initiatives like the Big Queer Wedding—a series of events that marry the ideals of inclusivity with celebration—this pillar is dedicated to creating space for love in all its forms.

4. Giving Back to Local and Queer Communities

Catalyst will also focus on regional outreach—such as volunteering, organizing queer connection parties (pre-wedding social events like drag shows, craft nights, and fundraisers), and fostering a broader sense of community beyond the wedding day. The Big Queer Wedding, for example, aims to marry four couples who might not otherwise afford a traditional big wedding, providing them with an unforgettable experience that celebrates their love and chosen family.

Why do these pillars matter?

Because wedding industry change happens through community, education, and action—not just through glossy photos or marketing promises. Catalyst is committed to supporting vendors and couples to help build a more equitable, joyful, and authentic wedding culture.

So, how will Catalyst put these principles into action? Here are some concrete ways:

  • Vendor Listings:

Available at three tiers—free, pro ($350/year), and deluxe ($700/year)—these profiles help vendors showcase their work, personality, and inclusivity. They include options to share personal stories, hobbies, or commitments to LGBTQ+ advocacy, making vendor-client connections more authentic.

  • Community Events:

Regional groups will host meetups, fundraisers (batch parties), and social events—things like drag shows, craft nights, or advocacy meetups—building relationships before clients even say “I do.”

  • Educational Resources:

The platform plans to offer classes on topics like non-traditional wedding styles, anti-racism, mental health, and SEO—helping vendors stay current and inclusive.

  • Supporting Queer Families:

Initiatives like the Big Queer Wedding will provide a platform for couples who might not otherwise be able to afford a big celebration, emphasizing community care and mutual support.

What does all this mean for you?

Whether you’re a vendor, couple, or industry ally, Catalyst is transforming wedding planning into a collective, values-driven process which favors real connection over transactional relationships.
