Raw Space vs. Full-Service Venue: Which is Right for Your Wedding?

Choosing the right venue is one of the most crucial decisions in wedding planning. It sets the tone for your entire event and can significantly impact your budget and logistics. In this guide, we’ll explore the differences between raw space venues and full-service venues, helping you decide which option best suits your needs.

Raw Space Venues

First you might be asking what exactly is a Raw Space Venue? A raw space venue is essentially a blank canvas. These venues offer minimal amenities, allowing you to customize every detail to fit your vision. When you are booking a Raw Space Venue you are paying to open the doors and rent the space for the evening, but you will also be bringing in all of the rentals, catering, and vendors. And when we say rentals we mean every single rental item including every fork, garbage cans, ovens, serving trays, heck… I have even brought sink set up to spaces.

These types of venues are often found in warehouses, lofts, or outdoor areas, making for a cool, non traditional venue option. These are ideal for creative couples or couples that want a highly themed out of the box wedding.

While, I am sure you will consider us biased, we absolutely believe that it is important to hire at least a partial planner for these venues. While many only require a Coordination package, there are many details that go into this style of event that a pro should have eyes on the entire time.

New York has MANY Raw Space Venues, more so than other markets. Some popular examples of Raw Space wedding venues include Greenpoint Loft, 26 Bridge, The Foundry, The Bordone, and Sound River Studios.

Pros of Raw Space Venues

  • Customization: You have complete control over the decor, layout, and overall aesthetic.

  • Unique Locations: Often located in unconventional spaces, offering a unique backdrop.

  • Flexibility: Freedom to choose your vendors, including caterers, decorators, and planners.

Cons of Raw Space Venues

  • Logistics: Requires more planning and coordination, as you’ll need to arrange for everything from furniture to lighting.

  • Hidden Costs: Additional expenses for rentals, permits, and setup can add up quickly.

  • Time-Consuming: More time is needed for setup and teardown, which can increase costs.

Full-Service Venues

Now that we have gone over Raw Venues, let’s discuss what is a Full-Service Venue? Full-service venues provide a comprehensive package, including amenities like catering, furniture, and staff. These venues are often hotels, banquet halls, or dedicated event spaces.

Some popular local examples would include Brooklyn Botanic Garden, The Wythe Hotel, The Central Park Boathouse, or The Bowery.

Pros of Full-Service Venues

  • Convenience: Many services are included, reducing the need to source external vendors.

  • Cost-Effective: Bundled these services can be more economical than sourcing individually.

  • Stress-Free: Venue staff handle logistics, allowing you to focus on other aspects of planning.

Cons of Full-Service Venues

  • Limited Customization: Less flexibility in decor and vendor choices.

  • Package Restrictions: May have preferred vendor lists or restrictions on outside services.

  • Higher Initial Cost: Upfront costs can be higher, though they may include more services.

Making the Decision

When choosing between a raw space and a full-service venue, consider your budget, time, and desired level of involvement in the planning process. A raw space offers creative freedom but requires more effort and potentially higher costs. A full-service venue provides convenience and support but may limit your customization options.

Pro Tip: Visit potential venues in person to get a feel for the space and ask detailed questions about what’s included in the rental fee.

Are Raw Space Venues cheaper than Full Service Venues?

Some Raw Space Venues may seem significantly cheaper than full service venues in the beginning due to their low venues cost. When determining what will be more cost effective you need to determine your preferred catering and service method. If you want to bring in a full service caterer, lounge furniture, draping, a dance floor, lighting, and flower installations, you will be looking at a much more expensive budget than an average banquet hall. If you are wanting to forgo florals, have a pizza party, and bring in basic rental items; then and only then… you might be looking at a total cost that is cheaper than a full service venue.

It is important to note that Many full service venues that we work with are luxury venues, but there are many banquet halls in New York that are more cost effective.

Conclusion

Selecting the right venue is about balancing your vision with practical considerations. Whether you choose a raw space or a full-service venue, understanding the pros and cons will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your wedding goals.
