The pandemic stunned the wedding industry. For me, 2020 was supposed to be a big breakout year. I was beginning to experience steady bookings, growing income, and a sense of stability. Instead, COVID hit like a freight train, forcing me to pivot overnight.

I recall: “2020 was supposed to be my year to take off. I had everything in place—weddings booked, processes refined—then everything changed, and I had to adapt quickly.” This sudden shift meant cancelling plans, rescheduling dates, and facing an industry in chaos. During turbulent times, many saw opportunity. The pandemic became a catalyst for entrepreneurship, sparking a wave of new wedding planners and vendors eager to innovate.

Pivoting: From Traditional Events to Creative Alternatives

COVID forced me to think outside the box. I vividly remember adapting in real-time, shifting from in-person wedding elements to safer, more intimate setups. Overall we had to deal with many issues that we never would have imagined dealing with as wedding planners.

  • Rescheduling multiple times:

Several couple’s weddings were pushed from spring to summer, then fall, only to become an intimate ceremony.

  • Innovative safety measures:

Hand sanitizers, masks, social distancing at the venue, and even tape on the dance floor to ensure pods.

“We had to be flexible with every detail. We were adding masks, adjusting table spacing, and passing inspection from health officials. It was wild but rewarding to pull it off.”

Flexibility, creativity, and risk management became the hallmarks of wedding planning during COVID.

Building Deeper Connections with Clients

One unexpected lesson was the profound bond formed with clients during the pandemic. I did not expect to get as close as I did to my COVID couples. The long planning timelines, ranging from nearly three years, fostered deeper relationships than ever before. We faced Extended planning periods, Working with couples through multiple reschedules and uncertainties. We bonded through Shared adversity and Navigating the stress, anxiety, and heartbreak together created an unbreakable bond. We offered a lof of Personal support, the emotional connection went beyond typical vendor-client relationships, often involving shared life challenges.

“I even cried at some weddings because I had been with these couples through so much, they became like friends or family.” – Carissa Campbell

Crises can forge stronger relationships. For vendors, showing genuine empathy and staying committed builds trust and loyalty. Adaptability became more crucial than ever. The pandemic pushed me into new roles, health expert, contract negotiator, crisis manager. With shifting dates, cancellations, and refunds, negotiating flexible contracts and understanding legalities became vital. Learning protocols like mask mandates, sanitation, and official inspections was essential. Just when it seems you’ve prepared for everything, new challenges emerge, requiring quick thinking and calm execution.

I state: “COVID made me a contract maestro and health expert, I had to learn on the fly to keep my clients safe and my business afloat.”How to Apply These Lessons

  • Build adaptable contracts that allow for rescheduling and cancellations.
  • Stay informed about health guidelines and local regulations.
  • Cultivate community and communication with fellow vendors for support and shared solutions.

Final Reflection: The Power of Resilience and Community

The pandemic taught me that deep connections, agility, and resilience are key to surviving and thriving during crises. My stories (from the chaotic day of a health inspection to the emotional rollercoaster of rescheduled wedding) highlight the importance of keeping a calm, creative, and empathetic mindset. As I conclude: “We all had to think outside our comfort zones. That’s made us better, more resourceful, and more connected.” For anyone in weddings or facing upheaval, my experience underscores: adapting with heart and ingenuity transforms challenges into opportunities for growth.
